Jill's
Day - National Dover demo in memory of Jill
|
As it was the first anniversary of Jill's death, feelings were
running high at Dover and there was a very good turn out of people.
The following comes from a report by a midlands activist.
After
a long journey down, we were encouraged to see so many fellow activists,
many who we knew well from other demos and from the airport. A sense
of determination and excitement filled the air, people were up for
it.
The day started with a noisey march down the road to the entrance
of Dover docks where we tried with some success to blockade the
roundabout. For several hours there were continual attempts to block
the road and a number of people were arrested. Meanwhile other activists
had made it up onto the flyover that spirals down into the docks
and were playing cat and mouse with the lorries and the Police.
It
was decided to march into Dover town centre to show people we were
there and because people felt that unlike Brightlingsea and Shoreham,
the people of Dover just didn't care about the whole live exports
issue.
There
were several hundred of us and as we marched through the town, the
displays of butchers shops were turned over and people invaded MuckDonalds.
We ended up surrounding the Police station chanting angrily ...
it was a great scene ... we had them surrounded :-)
After
this some of us decided to go on to a near by Rabbit breeders that
some local people knew of. As soon as we arrived people piled out
of the vans and started running to the sheds, windows were smashed
and people started returning to the vans with rabbits ... it was
a spontaneous day light liberation and a fine tribute to Jill.
Unfortunately the Police arrived pretty soon and a number of our
friends were arrested and it was a very late night before we finally
returned to the midlands with our released friends. Tired but very
satisfied with an excellent day.
