Phoenix
Aviation goes into liquidation!
|
On 14 July 95, Phoenix Aviation went into liquidation after running
up debts of more than £1 million. Christopher Barrett Jolley,
boss of Phoenix Aviation, had suspended flights back on 4 May due
to "routine maintenance" but they had never restarted.
Barrett
Jolley said, "Although the company is owed alot more money
than it owes, the situation with the animal flights has become impossible,
absolutely impossible to continue."
Police
chiefs breathed a huge sigh of relief at the news. Financing the
huge police operation at Coventry Airport had cost in excess of
£500,000 in the 8 months since veal flights started. Hundreds
of officers including mounted police had been on constant standby
and more than 300 arrests were made.
Midland
campaigners met outside the airport gates the next morning where
they held a party(which lasted the rest of the day) but pledged
to fight on for the end of all live exports.
One
longer term positive outcome of the campaign was that many Protestors
sued the Police for wrongful arrests ... the Police often took the
stance that someone was probably going to do something in the future
and so they arrested them before they did ... which as you might
guess ... is not actually lawful.
Nearly everyone who sued won their cases and recieved thousands
of pounds in compensation. Many people including one black activist
who was continually targetted in a blatant show of racism ... had
multiple victories.
This sweet justice also had a wider effect because much of this
money was ploughed back into campaigning ... so it's a big thanks
to Warwickshire and West Midlands Police for bankrolling the Animal
Rights Movement :-)
